Things to Consider When Renovating Your Bathroom
What you need to know about bathroom renovations
A bathroom renovation is perhaps one of the trickier renovation projects a home owner can undertake. It’s so complex that it requires the involvement of various skilled tradies to make sure everything is done properly and according to your specifications. Needless to say, there are a lot of things to consider when you’re renovating your bathroom. Here are some of those things to pay closer attention to.
Always consider the basics
Before planning your new bathroom, you need to take a good look at your existing one. You have to be completely aware of the existing plumbing, cavity space, electrical circuits and the materials the wall, floors and ceiling are made of. That way, you will be able to determine what area needs to be completely changed and what can be tweaked just a bit.
Finalise the layout
Before you start with your bathroom renovation, you have to be sure about the layout first. Ask yourself if you plan on making your bathroom self-contained, or if you’re going to connect it with your bedroom. Also think about whether you’re just making a few minor tweaks, or actually remove/add walls, install a bath, retile the floor or any kind of work that would essentially restructure the space. If the latter is the case, it’s going to be costlier in all respects.
Plumbing work
So you’re planning a complete bathroom renovation, where plumbing has to be moved to allow for your new bathroom design. However, before you start moving plumbing, you might want to seek the advice of a professional plumber and see if there are existing plumbing fixtures that can be incorporated into the new design, and therefore won’t require moving anymore. This is certainly cheaper, but if you really want to move the plumbing and you have the budget for it, then move them as you like. Just make sure this is done by a professional plumber.
Plan for the inconvenience
Unless your home has two or more bathrooms that everyone in your household can use, you certainly will be inconvenienced while your bathroom renovation is in progress. Since your bathroom will be out of commission for a certain period of time, you might want to rent a portaloo. If you’re pretty good friends with your neighbours, maybe you can ask to use their facilities for the duration of the bathroom renovation. A bathroom renovation is definitely going to affect your day-to-day life, so it’s best to be prepared for it.
