Why the Kitchen is the Most Important Part of the Home
Don’t take your kitchen for granted
Every room in a house serves a specific function, which means every single room in a home is important. Some rooms, however, are perceived to be more important than others. Many home owners say that of these rooms, the kitchen is the most important part of the home. Here are some of the reasons why.
It’s where the food we eat is prepared
This, of course, is the most obvious reason why the kitchen is the most important part of the home. The meals that fuel our bodies and minds are created there, after all. It’s where everyone in the household gather together to get the nourishment they need. While some have picked up the habit of eating elsewhere in the house, most of us still hold eating meals together as a family in the kitchen dear.
It’s where the family congregates
This doesn’t just apply to breakfast, lunch and dinner time. When someone’s cooking, other members of the household pitch in and help in any way that they can. They help cook, wash or dry the dishes. As we do all these things, we are in effect bonding with the rest of the family with conversations, jokes and even some light-hearted arguments about any given topic. To be honest, we spend more of our waking time in the kitchen than we do in the living room or any other part of the house.
A kitchen is a warmer place
We’re not even talking about literal warmth here, although it’s also true that a kitchen is a warmer place especially when something’s cooking in the stove or the oven. A kitchen is a warmer place because there’s just something so comforting and relaxing about gathering together around the dining table, or even just the kitchen counter top, with a steaming hot mug of coffee or tea in hand. It’s even a nice place to be even when you’re all alone with your thoughts.
More entertaining is done in the kitchen
The kitchen isn’t just the favourite gathering place of members of the family. Even visitors are now frequently entertained in the kitchen rather than the living room. These days, kitchens are the new living rooms, as more and more home owners install seating areas, flat screen TVs, or even fireplaces in the kitchen.
The kitchen is a major selling point
Sure, there are other parts of the house that could catch a prospective buyer’s eye if and when the time to sell your house comes. However, it is a fact that the first place people shopping for a new home check out is almost always the kitchen. The kitchen is a major selling point. If a house has a great-looking kitchen, the chances of the house fetching a very good price are extremely good. The same goes for kitchens that are bigger than usual.
Children learn lessons there
This may sound clichéd, but the kitchen is a perfect place to teach our children some useful lessons. While preparing food, our children can join us and learn how to properly slice an onion or how to mince tomatoes. As we gather around the dining table, children are in effect learning table manners, which we all know to be a very important social skill. Needless to say, the conversations that take place around the dining table could be a gold mine for life lessons as well.
For sure, the role of kitchens in our lives will continue to evolve over time. As of now, the kitchen is the most important part of the home as far as most home owners are concerned, and that is not likely to change in the next few years.
